studio1 Budget Studio 101

I have to admit, I’m pretty impressed with myself right now. It’s not often I build something of such sheer awesomeness that I feel the need to go on the internet and be like HOLY SHIT DUDE! But seriously, I’ve been a little lax lately while I’ve been setting up this beast in my studio. More on this mess and gear listing after the jump.

It all started when the greatest president since Hitler took office and decided to give money to people for being American, otherwise known as an “Economic Stimulus Check” or something like that. I decided what a great time to blow it all on a new keyboard. Knowing my space constraints, I bought a Novation XioSynth because it’s small frame would fit perfectly on what little desk space I have left.

Now anyone who has walked into my studio knows that it can best be described as a total clustefuck. Who was I kidding? I had no desk space left to offer my poor little new toy. Thus, it was time to go all out and get a new desk. I opted for the Studio RTA Creation Station with rack mounts and decided to go ahead and get a rack mount power supply from Furman. So far, we are looking at a grand total of $600. Not too bad.

Moving this heavy thing into my house was loads of fun. Once it was all set up, I decided to live out my dream and have every single musical component I own hooked into my two computers. Over the years, I’ve acquired so much gear that I rarely use because it just creates such a mess and is so inconvenient to use. As seeing I’ve been working so much with audio the last couple of years, it was really stunting when I just wasn’t getting the gear I needed set up when I needed it. Now at first glance, you might think I must be doing remixes for Technotronic to be able to afford all of this stuff. No way. Contrary to popular belief, my wages living in Buffalo equate that of your average Taco Bell employee anywhere else in the country. Since I was 16, I’ve been collecting all sorts of goodies and here they are:

  • Novation XioSynth
  • M-Audio Keystation
  • Studio RTA Creation Station
  • M-Audio X Session
  • M-Audio X Session Pro
  • 3 External Hard Drives (Storage / Backup)
  • MacBook Pro
  • iMac G5
  • Logic Studio
  • Ableton Live
  • Nord Lead
  • Moog Rogue
  • M-Audio FastTrack
  • Crate Amp
  • Behringer Eurorack
  • Furman M-8x
  • MicroKorg
  • Roland Juno 60 (not pictured)
  • assortment of cables

And pretty much everything is hooked into both computers and surprisingly works well. Now and then, I love to talk gear so if anyone else wants to join the mix, let me know and I’m more than willing to answer any questions about anything I own.
